There will be no 4th of July coffee sale. No Independence Day discounts. No cookout this year. The only fireworks I want to see is the righteous rage in the streets of America by actual freedom-loving people confronting these repressive new laws. They must not and will not stand.
I say this with a sad sense of despair that our country is moving backward towards fascism and against the popular will of the people. No birthday party is in order.
Will we stand for this bigoted zealotry? Will we be the proverbial frogs in the boiling water succumbing to a radical minority imposing their will on our communities? Will we relinquish sovereignty over our own bodies? Do we have the will to protect the safety of our actual children, the sanctity of our very air and water?
It is easy to become hopeless when the highest courts in the land unleash an avalanche of injustice. Please speak out. Do not be afraid to be “political” by speaking the truth. Your silence will not protect you; it only signals your consent.
May justice and liberty ring across this land. In the meantime…Knees down Fists up!
In the infamous speech “What to the Slave is the 4th of July” by Mr. Frederick Douglas, he demands that “The conscious of the nation must be roused…the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed and its crimes against God and man must be proclaimed and denounced.”
With a heavy heart,
